Get fit: Take a Walk
Why take a caribbean vacation? Consider this: You spend much time sitting. You sit at your desk. You sit in long meetings. In your car for the long commute to work. Then you go home and as you sit on your couch, you decide to take a vacation.
Great. You now find yourself sitting in the airport for one to two hours before your flight takes off.
After boarding your plane, you sit for another thirty minutes while they deice the plane.
Finally, you watch the handlers on the ground guide the plane to the runway — only to hear the pilot is waiting for clearance from air traffic control.
Your mood lifts as the plane taxis down the runway — climbing until it looks like a small toy plane from the ground. You soon realize your Caribbean vacation is taking shape. Depending on where in the Caribbean you’re going, you’ll likely sit for another five to eight hours. And if you’re are typical of most vacationers, you would sit on the beach — soaking up the sun, relaxing and drinking a few spiked glasses of orange juice.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. You could try walking. Yes, walking could be just as enjoyable as a relaxing day on the beach. The islands have many beautiful beaches — but there are just as many places to walk.
Now, I don’t suggest you take a long hike up a volcano. But you can start with a small step. Walk around the beach. Gradually, you can work your way up and down the back-streets around your hotel. Even better, you can go sightseeing — walking through the main streets in the city. Eventually, finding a touristy walking path means savings on car rentals.
You can do it. Walking is a pleasurable activity — providing many benefits to vacationers who try it. Here are three benefits of walking:
Weight loss. Drop those extra pounds you don’t need. Imagine going back to the office wearing one size smaller than before you left.
Social pleasure. You share your thoughts with your traveling companions. Imagine sharing colorful commentary with your traveling companions about the people, places, and events you meet while walking.
Good health. Walking improves blood circulation to your vital organs. Healthy organs last longer.
Make walking a part of your next Caribbean vacation.
