Many years ago I met a young woman who decide to give me her contact information. Before I made my first call she put me through the “database syndrome” That is she rattled off several different numbers I could use to reach her. After she spewed her facts and figures I had the proverbial headache. I am sure you have met a few people like this in your travels.
The thing is in those days there was just your landline from the traditional and monopolistic telephone companies. And there was the cell phone which had a separate number plus you had an office number, voice mail number, and other numbers I eventually forgot.
I don’t remember calling this person even once because I get confuse and tune out when people try to make things too complex for my little gray matter. So the thought of spending time on a caribbean vacation became a serious consideration as she scribbled her important information.
Fast-forward today and you have several smartphones available for people who try to make themselves look important. The cell phone takes the cake but the iphone, blackberry, and a host of other communication gadgets have hit the market in recent years. So far the iphone is not available in Canada but chatty phone users are licking their chops waiting for the day when they can put their fluid lips to one.
Many people are deciding to drop their landline in favor of mobile communications. This serves to pollute common spaces with constant chatter by insensitive people.
Imagine having your intimate details shared on a bus while your friend or sibling seeks relief from boredom. Smartphones are wonderful if used properly, but most people see them as fads and unknowingly annoy other travelers.
So if you need relief from modern communications, decide to spend some time romping on the beaches in the sunny Caribbean. It is a great way to get away from the fuss that we call communication today.
